    Description

    Here we have a
French Antique J. CARPENTIER, PARIS Brass Artillery Clinometer or Inclinometer.
This is also marked with a directional arrow and says Direction DU But, in English means 'towards goal'. The back side just has the number '529', probably a production serial number. Jules Carpentier was a French engineer and inventor credited with starting to build photographic and cinematographic cameras around 1890. He was also the designer of the submarine periscope. He was born in 1851 and died in a car accident in 1921. I have read where this tool was used even in WWI to set artillery range, therefore it was usually called a Gunner's Inclinometer or just Clinometer. The outer edges are slightly rounded to rest on the artillery barrel. The glass level bubble is in great shape and slides on the 90 degree scale as it should. The heavy brass has a few nicks from use.  Each leg is 5" long and it is 3/8" thick. No cracks, breaks or repairs.
    A Rarely seen inclinometer !
